1. What is a joist hanger?
A joist hanger is a metal bracket (typically made of galvanized steel, stainless steel, or other coated steel) designed to securely connect a joist (horizontal framing member) to a beam or ledger board. It provides critical support and transfers the load of the joist to the primary structure.
2. Why should I use joist hangers instead of just nailing joists in place?
Joist hangers provide a stronger, safer, and more reliable connection than toe-nailing. They:
Ensure proper load transfer.
Prevent sagging and failure over time.
Are required by building codes for most framing connections.
Allow for accurate and consistent joist spacing.
3. What types of joist hangers are available?
Standard/Sided Joist Hangers: Most common type, wraps two sides of the joist.
Top-Flange Joist Hangers: Have a flange that rests on top of the beam for easier installation, often used in deck framing.
Skewed Joist Hangers: For connections at angles other than 90 degrees.
Field-Attachable Joist Hangers: Two-piece hangers for connecting joists between already-installed beams.
Multi-Ply Joist Hangers: For connecting two or more joists together to a single point.
Heavy-Duty & Large Capacity Hangers: For larger dimensional lumber or higher loads.
4. How do I choose the right size joist hanger?
The hanger must fit the joist dimension precisely.
Height: The hanger should match the depth of your joist (e.g., use a 2x8 hanger for a 2x8 joist).
Width: The hanger's saddle width must match the joist's nominal width (e.g., 1.5" for a 2x joist, 3.5" for a 4x timber).
Load Rating: For structural projects, the hanger must be rated to support the calculated load. Always check local building codes.
5. What kind of fasteners (nails/screws) should I use?
Use only the nails/screws specified for the hanger. This is crucial.
Typically, hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel nails (often 1.5" long) are required to resist corrosion and provide the necessary shear strength.
Do not use standard wood screws or drywall screws. They are not structurally rated and will fail.
Most manufacturers list the exact quantity, type, and size of fasteners needed. Fill all nail holes in the hanger.
6. What is the correct installation method?
Position the hanger against the beam/ledger.
Fasten the hanger to the supporting member first, using the correct nails in all the holes on the flange.
Insert the joist into the hanger.
Fasten through the holes on the sides of the hanger into the joist. For larger hangers, nail in an alternating pattern to minimize gaps.
7. Can I double up joist hangers for extra strength?
No. Installing two standard hangers on one joist is not recommended unless using a specifically designed multi-ply hanger. The correct practice is to select a single hanger with the required load capacity.
8. Do I need to use joist hangers on both ends of every joist?
Not always, but it is very common. Building codes dictate where they are required. Typically, you need them where joists connect to a ledger board or beam (not at a top plate on a wall where there is continuous bearing below). For decks, they are almost always required at the ledger board connection.
9. Can joist hangers be used outdoors (for decks, etc.)?
Yes, but you must use corrosion-resistant fasteners and hangers (zinc-coated, galvanized, or stainless steel) rated for exterior/exposure conditions.
10. What are common installation mistakes to avoid?
Using undersized or oversized hangers.
Using incorrect fasteners (e.g., drywall screws).
Not filling all nail holes.
Attaching the hanger to the joist before the supporting member.
Installing the hanger upside down.
Bending the hanger's tabs to fit an incorrect size.
