1. What is a cabinet hinge?

2. What are the main types of cabinet hinges?

• Face Frame (Semi-Concealed) Hinges:

  • Partial Wrap-Around: Hinge wraps partially around the face frame. Common in frameless cabinets.

  • Full Wrap-Around: Offers more stability, wrapping fully around the frame.

• Frameless (Full Overlay) Hinges: Used on cabinets without a face frame (European-style). Typically fully concealed.

• Concealed/European Hinges: The most common modern hinge. Hidden when the door is closed. They are adjustable (in/out, up/down, side-to-side) and often soft-close.

  • Clip-on: Hinge cups into the door and clips onto the mounting plate on the cabinet. Easy installation/removal.

3. What is "overlay" and how do I determine mine?
Overlay refers to how much the cabinet door covers the cabinet frame opening.

• Full Overlay: Door covers the entire front of the cabinet box (common in frameless cabinets).

• Half/Partial Overlay: Door covers about half the width of the face frame (common in traditional face frame cabinets with multiple doors).

• Inset: Door sits flush inside the cabinet frame opening.
  Measurement: For face frame cabinets, measure the distance from the edge of the door to the edge of the face frame. This determines the required hinge's "overlay" measurement.

4. What does "bore" mean?
Bore refers to the hole drilled into the back of the cabinet door to accommodate the cup of a concealed hinge. The standard bore diameter is 35mm, and depth is typically 12-13mm.

5. What is hinge "adjustability"?
Modern concealed hinges offer screw adjustments on three axes after installation:

• In/Out (Depth): Moves the door closer to or farther from the cabinet.

• Up/Down (Height): Aligns the top and bottom of the door.

• Side-to-Side (Lateral): Aligns the gap between adjacent doors.
  This allows for perfect alignment without remounting the hinge.

6. Soft-Close vs. Self-Close: What's the difference?

• Soft-Close: A hydraulic or pneumatic mechanism slowly pulls the door shut in the last few inches, preventing slamming. It's an integrated feature of the hinge or a separate damper.

• Self-Close (or Snap-Close): A spring mechanism pulls the door firmly shut once it passes a certain point. It doesn't have the slow, controlled motion of soft-close.

7. How many hinges do I need per door?
This depends on the door's height and weight.

• General Rule:

  • Doors up to 24-30" tall: 2 hinges.

  • Doors 30-48" tall: 3 hinges.

  • Doors over 48" tall: 4 or more hinges.

• Heavy doors (solid wood, glass, thick panels) require more hinges for support.

9. How do I install concealed cabinet hinges?

1. Bore the Cup: Drill a 35mm diameter hole at the specified depth and location on the back of the door.

2. Mount Hinge to Door: Screw the hinge into the bored hole.

3. Mount Plate to Cabinet: Attach the mounting plate (bracket) inside the cabinet box or to the face frame.

4. Hang Door: Clip or screw the hinge arm onto the mounting plate.

5. Make Adjustments: Use the adjustment screws to align the door perfectly.

10. What are common problems and solutions?

• Doors not aligned: Use the hinge's adjustment screws.

• Door rubbing/sagging: Tighten screws, check for correct hinge type/weight rating, add a third hinge.

• Hinge loose: Ensure screws are biting into solid wood (not just particle board). Use longer screws or wood filler/epoxy to re-anchor them.

• Soft-close not working: The damper may be worn out or broken; it is often replaceable separately from the hinge.
